Consortium for the Protection of Po Delta Rice PGI
PGI quality mark
The specificities of Po Delta Rice PGI, due to the area in which it is produced and processed, were recognized in 2009 with the award of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) mark and registration in the PGI product register granted by the European Commission and the Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policy. The process for obtaining the certification began in 2002. The quality and production chain of Po Delta Rice PGI are guaranteed by the strict disciplinary code introduced by the Consortium, which establishes cultivation methods and times.
The European mark officially recognizes and identifies PGI certified products in the European community and worldwide, guaranteeing their local origin and special link with their territory.
The innovative project introduced by the Consortium regarding the processing of rice has led to a recovery of water that has been possible to reduce energy expenditure and pollution. In the last 3-4 years, the combination of production chain and disciplinary code has led to an increase in the production of Po Delta Rice PGI of 780%, data certified by the National Rice Board. This will bring great benefits in terms of well-being and work in the community.
In December 2012, twelve founding members (a group of companies from Veneto which are supported by the main rice companies from Ferrara) created the Consortium for the Protection of Po Delta Rice PGI, active in the territory between Emilia Romagna and Veneto, inside the Po Delta Park. Currently the Consortium has 35 member companies.
Our mission is to protect and enhance both the territory and a natural, unique and healthy product such as Po Delta Rice PGI, whose cultivation is an integral part of the culture and economy of these areas: it’s the story of a centuries-old tradition that is intertwined with the reclamation of the territories and with the development of the rural areas of the provinces of Ferrara and Rovigo.
